One Briton's Perspective of One Man's Remarkable Bid For The White House
by ELAINE SIHERA (Ms Cyprah)

Obama3_2.jpg

This is a personal tribute to Barack Obama, President-Elect of the United States of America, consisting of all the articles I have written on him since he launched his campaign in 2007. Being rather ill throughout his campaign, I journeyed with him from my computer. I am a Type 2 diabetic whose body suddenly decided in March 2007 to reject all my medication. Having such an inspiring and motivating person to focus upon helped my tenacity and resilience in dealing with my personal crisis perhaps far more than I can ever realise. I was told I was unique in Britain for such a condition, but just, for once, I wanted to be like everyone else!

YES, I CERTAINLY CAN!

I remained very poorly and weak for the rest of 2007 while doctors carefully tried other medicines and injections, none of which worked. I recovered slightly for three months at the start of the new year, then worsened again between April and July 2008. Since then, there has been some steady improvement, fingers crossed. The difference in output for the two years was stark: only 14 articles written on Barack in 2007 compared to over 100 in 2008! I think I am still here to create this website because of Obama's catchy campaign slogan, YES WE CAN!

Last year June, in particular, when the surgery nurse offered to call an ambulance because she feared I was heading into a coma, despite the fact that I was on tons of insulin, the words YES I CAN! kept ringing inside me. When I was too weak and lethargic to do anything, YES I CAN! propelled itself in front of me and when I felt exceedingly low, unwanted and missed my children terribly, YES I CAN! danced challengingly in front of my gaze.

I could not fail to see the irony of our situation. He was there chasing a seemingly impossible dream and I was simply chasing my life, trying to stop it from leaving me. I guess there were times when he was scared of what he wished for, while I was simply scared of my medication not working, my injections failing, having a stroke or a heart attack. YES WE CAN! has helped him into the White House and perhaps brought me to this amazing point. Hopefully, I'll still be round to see his inauguration and his government.

THE ARTICLES

It all started when I happened to see a picture of Barack visiting Kenya in 2006 and was very struck by his dignity, calm assurance and cheerfulness. I had never heard of him before and I was even more surprised by how he was being treated, as though he was much higher than a Senator. That was the first time I read that he might make a great president and decided to look out for his activities. I forgot about him until he launched his campaign and I wrote my first article in February of 2007. By the time I created this website, I had written 123 pieces on him, or related to him through the campaign. I was quite astounded by my passion to see this man win, and the words flowed like a burst dam. I thought it would make a good resource and archive to separate the campaign items from my other writings and keep adding as he progresses. It should be interesting to look back after the President's first term of office and see what is written here about it. :o)

This Week With Barack Obama

Some Americans did wonder why I was taking such a keen interest in their elections, especially when I went to Chicago to help on the phones during election week and was at Grant Park that awesome night to see his acceptance speech. They had never had such global attention before. Was it because of his colour? Partly, yes, it was very exciting to have the first ever Black US president. But what excited me more were the words coming out of his mouth, his passionate care for people and his genuine sincerity at wanting to instigate change in his country. What a guy he has proved to be. He has certainly inspired me! I am indebted to my column on Newsvine for harnessing this collection. All the articles on this website were first published on Newsvine, unless otherwise stated. Comments made by Newsvine readers on each article are available on the website too.
